Question by Eddie: can you differentiate these latin dances 4 me? (mambo, rumba, samba, etc.) because they all seem alike to me..?
tango, mambo, rumba, salsa, samba, cha cha cha.
and what are they known for? (in the dance not the history) you know, so i can differentiate them xD
And another unrelated question; what are the elements of dance? (optional =3)
(see, I’m working on a project about elements of dance, and i want to use these latin dances as
“guide” or examples… thank you!)

Argentine Tango – Doesn’t have a “basic”. It’s all variations on the four cardinal directions, changes in timing, direction, and level. It is still technically a traveling dance, although given how crowded the floors are in Buenos Aires you don’t do much moving there. You can tell the dance by the fact that there are dramatic pauses and the occasional leg-hook (gancho). You can tell the music by the use of accordion/bandoneon, mix of somber and sweet tones, lack of percussion instruments (unless you count the piano, or the fact that Piazzolla’s players sometimes tap their violins and guitars) and the fact that the instruments sometimes trade places for who’s doing which part (melody, counter-melody, or harmony). Basic tango is in 4/4, but vals (tango waltz) is 3/4 and milonga (tango’s close ancestor) is in 8/8 time with a habanero (badum bum bum) beat.
Ballroom Tango – The basic (for the lead) is left forward, right forward, (doubletime) leftforward-rightstep-bringleftnexttoright(but don’t put weight on it)-pause. Unquestionably a traveling dance. You can tell the dance by the aforementioned basic, the characteristic head-snap (suddenly looking one way and the other), and the occasional promenade (lead’s left arm and thus the follow’s right arm extended, both look in that direction, and march off that way). The music has a steady marching beat in 4/4 time, the first step of which is a sort of drum “trill”, as follows: “Pararum – pum – pum – pum”.
I’m not familiar with Mambo.
Rumba – The basic for the lead is left forward, (doubletime)rightstep-lefttogetherwithright, right back, (doubletime)leftstep, righttogetherwithback. Tends to be a stationary dance. The interesting thing about this one is that because the actions mirror each other, the same movements can be taken by both lead and follow. Not very familiar with the music, also a 4/4.
Salsa – The basic for the lead is (doubletime) leftforward-rightback, left together, (doubletime) rightback-leftforward, right together. Also stationary. The dancing tends to be more “flashy” than some others, with a lot of hip movement as well as arm embellishments. The music is also brash and colorful, with a lot of focus on the trumpet. Two odd characteristics of the music: For the first, the song often changes key at about halfway through, and for the second, there’s sometimes a percussion instrument that sounds like winding up a toy. 4/4 time, and often a beat of slow, quickquick slow quickquick.
Also not familiar with samba.
Cha cha – The basic for the lead is left forward, right back, triplestep, right back, left forward, triplestep. Technically stationary but the width of steps for the triplestep can make it travel. The triplestep is most often accomplished /on the floor/ by shuffling in place, but good style suggests sidestep-steptogether-sidestep again, and skilled dancers can use that space and time to accomplish anything (turns, traveling, flourishes) that takes three beats (out of four) to do – essentially quickstep-quickstep-step. However it is, the goal is to be on the opposite foot; you can mess with the timing and take a heavy one-step if you’re trying to emphasize something, or go for five if you’re insane. The regular use of triple step is the most identifiable element of cha-cha. The music has the unmistakable cha-cha beat in 4/4 time: Tap, tap, chachacha.
